NBA Stacking the Deck

NBA Free Agency one of the most entertaining off season events in all four of the major sports here in the US. One could make the argument globally as it was bigger then the World Cup.

We Saw Paul George resign with OKC and unless you were a Lakers fan or former Sonics fan you rooted for that type of story. LeBron James going to the Lakers it was foreseen so not exactly a surprise. The roster that went with James shortly after is a big question mark. Everyone is waiting to see if LA will get Kawhi Leonard. Recently according outlets the Lakers were willing to wait til Leonard was a free agent to get him. Only problem with that is the Lakers once again open themselves up to Leonard maybe liking the place where he is at. It may not happen but do the Lakers want to roll that dice again.

We saw Cousins sign with the Warriors and the social media outrage or response was that the league is stacked. Is the league stacked like a stack of chocolate chip pancakes? No! The league has seen this before. You can look to the current Warriors, the 90's Bulls, 80's Lakers and Celtics, in the 70's there were 8 different teams that won a title. in the 60's the Celtics dominated as well.

SO the league has seen one maybe two teams run rough shot over the league. Is this bad? Well it isn't great but the NBA has played this model and they still thrive. Will they overtake the NFL? No! The NFL gives fans the hope in one year could be a quick turnaround such as we saw with last season's LA Rams. We don't see those kinds of turnarounds in the NBA. As a colleague mentioned on his twitter that probably the fake outrage on social media is because it doesn't feel like anyone can challenge the Warriors. That maybe true but that is up to the other 29 teams in the NBA. It may feel like the title is a forgone conclusion but that's why we don't allow these things to only play out on paper or social media. The NBA will play its games. I think we have the nostalgia from the 90's because during the Jordan Bulls you had Reggie Miller and the Pacers challenging, Patrick Ewing and the Knicks thumping, and others that gave Jordan a run for his money. They still lost but in our minds they challenged Jordan. The same opportunity is still in the NBA, LeBron and the Lakers can frustrate and challenge, The Jazz with Gobert, and Mitchell could challenge, The Rockets already pushed the Warriors to 7 games.

The NBA maybe stacked in the west and the Warriors are more then likely going to win another title but just in case the improbable happens and the Warriors get upset by an underdog we will all know where we were. It may sound simple that is why they play the game, but it's true on paper it is not suppose to happen but there is always a team there cause chaos.
